#1 Why does Jesus need a PR guy? (Essay) I teach a class called Art and Christian Faith. We talk about a lot of issues in that class that live at the intersection of art, the church, and culture more broadly. The
class is based on readings and discussion so it can head in all sorts of directions...[today] a student came to me and asked what I thought about the “Jesus commercials” in the Superbowl....
#2 The religious
narcissist (Essay) After I left a teaching position with a corrupt president, I started hearing people refer to him as a Narcissist. I also have a sister about whom we used to
say, “She just can’t see beyond herself.” It was always a benign issue… until it wasn’t. Over the years, I realized the narcissism there. It was painfully demonstrated to me....
#3 A call for Christians: Challenge Hell’s native tongue by telling the truth about American history (Essay) I was taught that American slaves were treated well by their masters and that most of them preferred life on the plantation to freedom. This obvious lie was among several that were perpetuated throughout the American educational system for decades. And now as Bethany Bell points out in an article … these lies were part of an intentional effort to romanticize the American South....
When I first began developing a systematic theory of philosophical aesthetics I wrote about it here in a series called 10 Days of Aesthetics. Presently, it makes more sense to combine the ten short essays from that series into one more comprehensive essay. That is what follows....
In my experience, artists tend to live on the fringes of societal norms due in part to seeing the world in a different way but when you add faith into the mix it
can further cause the artist of faith to feel even more isolated and without a community that really understands or appreciates their often unique vision and ‘take’ on the world. Interestingly, the first person in scripture to have the Holy Spirit bestowed.... |

Stanley’s North Point Community Church, located in Alpharetta, Ga., will host the event, the Unconditional Conference, in September. Speakers at the conference will include Stanley himself, along with LGBTQ+ advocate Justin Lee, former pastor John Ortberg, North
Point pastor Debbie Causey and the co-founders of Embracing the Journey, Greg and Lynn McDonald....
An advertisement about Jesus shown during the Super Bowl proved to be the second-most engaging commercial during the game’s broadcast. The company EDO studies ads that people watch and also assesses searches for the ad’s product online. EDO reported that the metrics of the 60-second commercial, “Love Your Enemies,”
was the #2 most engaging ad to the audience....
While there is an overall decline in
belief, the most notable loss has been seen in mainline Protestant denominations. Americans are either leaving organized religion or flocking to nondenominational congregations. There is also a greater partisan divide, with atheists more likely to identify with Democrats, while nondenominational Christians more likely to identify with Republicans....
I remember in my first year teaching at a Southern Baptist college several of us went to a friend’s house for Thanksgiving. One of the
theology professors said something derogatory about Democrats. My wife and I looked at each other and then told him we were Democrats. One of the funniest things ever was....
Some readers are characterizing Pope
Benedict XVI’s last book as a posthumous attack against the condition of the Catholic Church under Pope Francis’ leadership. The pope emeritus, who died Dec. 31, had instructed that the book be published only after his death. The book is titled, What is Christianity? Some of its contents are previously published essays, while some of the writing contained in it is.... |
